METISfiles analyst Pim Bilderbeek and Heliview Consultancy managing director Ruud Alaerds presented on the Future of Telecom at the quarterly meeting of the Ambassadors of Telecom at the castle Nijenrode. Combining Heliview and METISfiles research insights they addressed the three biggest issues in telecoms at the moment:
- Where will the growth come frome?
- How can the sector remain relevant?
- What will be the business models of the future?
Some examples that were highlighted during the presentation include:
Growth: Communications as a service (CaaS) is a growth opportunity within public cloud. For the next couple of years we predict that public cloud spending in the Netherlands will increase from €324 million in 2011 to €959 million in 2015, a CAGR of 33%.
Relevance: Through establishing BlueVia, Telefonica aims to stay relevant for web and app developers who are used to working with the likes of Google, Facebook, and Twitter instead of telecom operators.
Business models: On top of the telco business model of selling service/capacity bundles, telcos should mix and match netco, webco, capco, servco, and connectco business models for maximum competitive value and profit. Macheen is an example of how a telco business model can be flipped.
